Dr. María Generosa Souto Figueroa was officially admitted as a Full Academician of the prestigious institution ”Royal European Academy of Doctors” (RAED)
In a solemn ceremony held on February 10 at the “Fomento del Trabajo” headquarters, Barcelona. The president of the Academy, Dr. Alfredo Rocafort Nicolau, announced at the opening session that at the General Meeting held on July 18, 2024, Dr. M. ª G. Souto Figueroa was unanimously elected as a Full Academician of this Royal Corporation
Dr. María Generosa Souto Figueroa, PhD in Chemical Sciences, Graduate in Pharmacy from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Professor of Physics and Chemistry, was officially admitted as a Full Academician of the prestigious institution “Royal European Academy of Doctors” (RAED), in a solemn ceremony held on February 10 at the “Fomento del Trabajo” headquarters, Barcelona. The president of the Academy, Dr. Alfredo Rocafort Nicolau, announced at the opening session that at the General Meeting held on July 18, 2024, Dr. M. ª G. Souto Figueroa was unanimously elected as a Full Academician of this Royal Corporation.
In her excellent introductory keynote lecture, The mysterious waters in inland Galicia: Ourense, the Doctor highlighted the historical use of mineral-medicinal waters in Galicia, the main documents that exist since the Middle Ages, the scientific studies carried out, current benefits and therapeutic indications, as well as other important arguments about health and wellness centres, their competences, diversification, offers, social interaction, new laws, and the concepts that encompass Health and Wellness Tourism with approaches that include nutrition, fitness, aesthetics, culture, recreation and leisure.
Important reflection on the challenge of reconciling the new socio-economic and environmental conditions with the skills, actions and solutions necessary with the specificities of Balneology to respond to the objectives of an innovative, creative, harmonious future, in balance with the environment, the economy and sustainability.
The Royal European Academy was represented by Dr. Joaquim Gironella Coll, specialist in Urology and Occupational Medicine, Academician of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, honorary member of the Superior Council of Doctors, among other positions that distinguish him. He reiterated that the magnificent speech of the new academician reinforces the thermal baths as a reference of civilization, attested by numerous chronicles, scientific studies, not only for the recognized therapeutic qualities of their waters, but for the physical, mental, emotional, social connection, which decisively influences the quality of life, prevention and promotion of health, comprehensive approach, reinforcing the new multidimensional concept of Health.
This illustrious doctor, a worthy representative of her beloved Galicia, with a great professional, scientific and personal career, author of articles in specialized magazines and valuable books, has received various institutional recognitions, different distinctions, and international awards, including the Gold Medal of Termatalia (International Fair of Thermal Tourism, Health and Well-being), the Doctor Paul Couturier Medal of the French Society of Thermalism and Thalassotherapy for Oral Health, the Award of the Ministry of the Presidency and Public Administration of Galicia, delegate of FEMTEC in Spain (World Federation of Hydrotherapy, Climatotherapy).
The ceremony ended with exciting applause and the appreciated gift of two of her interesting books to the participants.
